For most of my life I played sports and maintained a decent level of fitness. It wasn’t until I moved across the country that my weight went downhill. I gained extreme amounts of fat – so much that I would never even take my shirt off for bed, or around people I wasn’t comfortable with. At my worst I was upwards of 250lbs at only 5ft 6. I struggled for a long time with hating the way I looked. I tried countless amounts of fad diets (Weight Watchers, Atkins, etc…) and would occasionally lose some weight, but could never keep it off. It wasn’t long before others began to notice my struggle, too.
When I was a sophomore, my football coach pulled me aside and said, “you have a future in this program, and I would like you to wrestle to get rid of some of the excess fat, so that we can put you in the position you belong in.” This suggestion changed me for the better – I owe a lot of my success to him.
At first, I was resistant to his plan – I was lazy and didn’t want to do anything other than football. Nevertheless, I asked my wrestling coach for a diet plan to help me lose some weight, on top of the workouts. He was great at making me feel accountable to stay with the program. Three months later, when the wrestling season came to an end, I weighed 205 lbs.
Although I was pleased with losing 45lbs, I hadn’t put on muscle, and still wasn’t satisfied. I began to search for a gym with the tools to advance my fitness, and came across the Zoo. The atmosphere and amazing staff had me coming back every day. As I progressed, members began asking me how I had maintained muscle while simultaneously burning fat. The encouragement from everyone, including the owner, John, kept me motivated. The great selection of equipment at the Zoo was also a huge factor in my journey.
I now have 10% body fat and have lost a total of 83 lbs, which is far more than I ever expected to see myself achieve. Thank you John, and your gym, for making my results possible.

Beth and Ed
Beth and Ed know what it means to push themselves to the limit, and are constantly setting new goals and demolishing them. In only a year and a half, the two of them have completely transformed. You’ll find them in the gym on a daily basis – lifting weights in circuits that they set up together, doing interval training, or sweating it out in Beth’s spin classes. They are both active members of our Zoo Community – participating in all of our team building events, and often placing in the top tier at obstacle course races.
